My First Recording
In the fall of 2009, two men went on a quest fueled by creation. Jovan Mays and Marty Lastovica met on the Chadron State campus in Chadron, Nebraska. Marty, a singer-song writer/DJ/Producer from Omaha and Jovan, a poet /organizer from Denver, started a group/organization called “Small Man Big Dream” with the intent to bring communities together through the arts. This union blossomed into the already established Sigma Tau Delta Open Mic Series which continues to supply this 5’800 person town with apt entertainment and expression at the exceptional Bean BrokerCoffee House. As well as advancing Jovan’s brain child “Release”. An annual Showcase geared around bridging local and national talent from all genres and perspectives and putting them on stage in Chadron.
Once graduated in 2010, Mays was looking to make moves within the SLAM poetry circuit. Understanding that an album would help put his voice out there he reached out to none other than Marty. In the winter of 2010, Jovan and Marty began crafting “The Pride EP” in the Lastovica family gun closet in Omaha. These 8 tracks were mastered and printed in November of 2011. In 2012, the pair plans on releasing a full length album.
“The Pride EP” is a great arrangement of Spoken Word Poetry
blended with Negro Spirituals, Blues & Acoustic Guitar, Indie Rock, Funk and other influential sounds derived from the atmosphere. The poetry itself speaks on an array of topics from the extinction of the Siberian Tiger to playing college football in Nebraska. This disk can be purchased in the store.
Enjoy these sample tracks.

Bigger Than You
My poem "Bigger Than You" is a dedication to playing college football at Chadron State College. In this track it is dubbed with Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine , From the album Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place (2003)
My poem "Loves Liberation" Is a dedication to the uniting of Deb and Tim Nolting (2 of my favorite poets). Marty Lastovica has added his touch with a great guitar backing.
